Description: Bilingual Teacher (1 Year Contract)

Broad Function:
The Bilingual Teacher will support the multilingual needs of our elementary, middle and high schools. This individual will be required to teach several subjects to one class of students at the elementary level with a focus on native speaking students. The Bilingual Teacher will provide a rigorous academic environment that actively engages students; incorporates best educational practices; creates an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and addresses the needs of all learners and supports the social/emotional development of the students. Achieving academic excellence requires that the Bilingual Teacher works collaboratively with other members of the school staff and with the parents of each student.
At the Middle/High School level, the bilingual teacher will be responsible for teaching specialized subjects to multiple classes. This individual will be required to teach the designated material in two languages, transitioning between the two languages throughout the lesson.
At the Elementary School level, the bilingual teacher will be responsible for teaching the Common Core Standards in the native language and/or in English for students who do not demonstrate proficiency in English. He/she will assist students with learning English and with understanding the culture of America and the community.
Essential Functions:
- Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English and in the native language of students in the Common Core Standards. Instruction shall be closely related to and coordinated with the regular instructional program so that students meet and exceed the Common Core Standards.
- Plans, organizes and provides instruction to assist students in mastering verbal and written skills in English, as appropriate, coordinated with instruction in the required English as a Second Language Program with the goal to exit students into the regular education program.
- Engages the learners in differentiated learning experiences for the range of skill levels and developmental needs found in the classroom, managing, when appropriate, multiple instructional activities simultaneously.
- Effectively organizes a variety of materials, equipment, media, and community resources to support the instructional program, using school approved procedures.
- Uses effective presentation skills when employing direct instruction, including appropriate vocabulary and examples, clear and legible visuals, and articulate and use of audible speech.
- Provides a nurturing, supportive, and positive classroom climate that encourages student responsibility, using positive motivation, clear classroom routines, challenging instructional strategies, and effective classroom management techniques.
- Assesses the learning of students and adjusts the learning experiences accordingly, requesting advice and assistance from specialists when appropriate.
- Assists with the preparation, monitoring, and following of Individualized Education Plans for selected students assigned to the class.
- Employs a variety of methods for students to demonstrate learning and accomplishments.
- Evaluates and grades homework, assignments, and tests in a timely fashion, providing feedback to the student on performance.
- Maintains records indicating progress of the student and assist with the evaluation and assessment of students.
- Completes, in a timely fashion all records and reports as required by law and regulation or requested by the Principal/Chief Supervisor of Bilingual Education. Maintain accurate attendance records.
- Assists in the administration and coordination of the annual assessment (LAS Links) of identified EL students as mandated by State and Federal statutes.
- Communicates with parents/guardians of bilingual students regarding progress and changes to services using meetings, conferences and report cards, and grades.
- Works with building administration and the ML department head to develop reasonable schedules for students.
- Submits lesson plans in the approved format to the Principal as required and requested.
- Communicates regularly with the parents to nurture a supportive and cooperative relationship between home and school.
- Works cooperatively with adults assigned to the classroom (e.g., paraprofessionals, student teachers, parents, and volunteers), establishing clear expectations for roles and responsibilities.
- Attends required staff meetings and serves, as appropriate, on staff committees.
- Performs any duties that are within the scope of employment and certifications, as assigned by the Principal,Department Chair and/or assigned supervisor, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation
- Participates in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve instructional practice and positively affect student achievement
- Always maintains respect for confidential information
- Suggest to the administration any program needs or changes that are required.

Qualifications, Experience and Job Requirements:
|
- Bachelor’s degree in Language Arts required.
- Valid State of CT Bilingual (009/902) Certificate and CT Certificate 111 required.
- Ability to demonstrate proficiency in Spanish required.
- Exhibits a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills that relates well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
- Ability to foster and facilitate learning and classroom management
- Understands and comply with the policies, rules and regulations regarding the education of bilingual education students.
- Adheres to the guidelines of the MFT contract
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively in English and in the selected native language, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
- Has excellent integrity; demonstrates good moral character and initiative.
